Introduction:

This is my 97' Dodge Neon DOHC 2.0L Sport Coupe. I bought it brand new with only 7 miles on it. It's all paid for. I've been modding it for a while.  The old build had 241 HP and 234 ft. lbs. of torque at the wheels (The new build you can check out at Stage 5) Bringing that power in was an SRT-4 Turbo (Mitsubishi TD04-16G turbo running currently at 15 lbs of boost), MegaSquirt Engine Management System, AGP Wastegate, Innovate Wide Band O2 sensor, Turbo XS Blow Off Valve, Wisco 8.8:1 Forged Pistons, Fidanza Adjustable Cam Gears, OBX 6.25 qt. oil pan with return line, Accel 36lb. injectors with bosch injector clips, Walbro 255lph fuel pump with the Spool Boy Modification, AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator, Fuel Return Line installed, Johnnyracecar Custom Intercooler 30X8.5X3.125thick, Turbo XS Manual Boost Controller, Battery Relocated to Trunk, 2.5" Custom Turbo Piping, PT heads Port Matched and Polished cylinder head with a 3 angle valve job, Port matched intake manifold, High Flow cat back exhaust, Vibrant Performance front and rear strut bars, 60mm Throttle body, Mopar Computer( to run the sensors and A/C ), MSD ignition coil with 8.55mm MSD wires,  mpx underdrive pulley, Vibrant Performance Dual Exhaust, Mopar EGR Block off kit, Polyurethane motor mount inserts and 17" Exel Rims with 205/40/17 tires . Man this thing is fast. To see the steps I took, check the Stage links to see all of the new upgrades. I've broken down all the upgrades into stages. So far there are 5. 5 is still currently ongoing. Upgrading can be very addictive. After you get used to the first upgrade, you'll want more...trust me, you always will want more. LOL . Enjoy it! I do!

I do all this work myself. If you need some advice on how to install something, e-mail me at dtoll2002@yahoo.com.

In case your wondering, I'm doing all the upgrades to the engine first.

Here's a picture under the hood of the new mods recently  installed (above). I don't plan on stopping upgrades anytime soon so check back often =P.

BACKGROUND:

In case your wondering about my background, In High School I took Auto mechanics for 2 years.  I was a mechanic for about 2 years following (got tired of working on cars that were still temperature hot and burning myself). Then became a Machinist for 11 more years. I was a lead machinist for a long time. I love working on new designs and did proto-type work on CNC Vertical Milling machines including 4th and 5th axis setups. Also did program editing (at the machine), Setup and Operation of new products.

I love working on cars and adding performance upgrades. If anyone out there has any questions about upgrades or where to look to purchase them for your car I can usually find them. Please feel free to e-mail me at dtoll2002@yahoo.com . Thanks for visiting my site. -Rich

Major setback. I'm really bummed out. I removed my plugs and sprayed WD-40 down in the cylinders to help lube them up. Then I hand cranked the engine over and heard a pop. I looked at cylinder head and the last exhaust valve on the drivers side was stuck in the down position. After calling my friend Ted, it was pretty obvious that the valve stem is bent. So, the whole head has to come back off. I guess it's a good thing I had this happen now then while actually driving it. That would've been nasty. I was sooo close to starting it.  Anyway, I added some pictures Click Here to see what I did today.

Posted 05/29/10

All the intercooler piping is done. Cold Air Intake done. First 8AN fuel line done (had to order some more parts) and I bought a little gift for my car. Ok, maybe not so little. I added a page 3 to the Stage 5 upgrade because of all the pictures to decrease load times. Click Here to see what I did today.

Got the back half of the exhaust on the car welded in place. Man, doing a custom exhaust is a straight pain in the rear! Will I do it again? Yeah...probably. I spent all day on just the back half of the car. Included a photo of myself this time around considering it's been so long.  Click Here to see what I've done.

Posted 04/04/10

Installed my new clutch cable. The dealer wanted 154.00 for it, I got it from modern performance for 104.!! with the extra money I saved I bought their polished shifter knob. Finished up straightening out my wire harness (god that was tedious work), and installed my fuel rail with my 36lb. injectors. Also did some proto typing of how I'll probably run the boost piping. Click Here to see what I've done.

Posted 04/02/10

I cut the front end of the Borla exhaust and welded in my Vibrant Performance Resonator today. It's a 3 day weekend (thank god) so I'm going to go at this full steam ahead. I'm using 409 SS Mandrel bends to complete the exhaust. I bought an abrasive cutoff saw that uses a 14" wheel and it's proving to be a pain in the rear to cut this. But, I don't care I'm going to get it done.

My welds are getting better and better.  Click Here to see what I've done.

Posted 03/28/10

Took alot time off the build. Did alot of thinking about what I wanted to do with the exhaust. Well, that's all been figured out now. I don't like loud exhaust systems and if you've seen my dyno run in the video section you'll notice how quiet it was on the last build. So Click Here to see what I've done.

Modified the fans to fit the Griffon Radiator. Did a prep fit with it in the car. Also bolted in the Intake manifold. So far so good. Stay tuned people, the train is a moving. -Rich

Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 08/16/09

Got the Exhaust manifold and turbo all bolted up with the coolant lines and oil lines bolted into place. I've got the coupling reducers sitting in place to give you an idea of where the piping for the intercooler will go. Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 08/10/09

Had some problems with Hahn turbo manifold so I ended up going back to the first manifold and removing the giant c-clip that held the compressor wheel on so I could make it fit. Had to drill and tap new holes into the compressor housing. Wasn't too thrilled about that but, now it's done and their is no binding with the internal wastegate. Which was my main concern. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 07/01/09

I added Chris from PA to the readers rides section. Nice car. Click Here to see the pictures.

 Posted 05/27/09

I received the Hahn Racecraft 20g turbo manifold today. I must say. High, very high quality! I will be making a modification to the manifold to make it flow alot better since it is a Log manifold. The Tig welding is excellent so hats off to Hahn.  Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 05/24/09

I ordered the Hahn Racecraft Turbo Manifold for the 20g. They list it on their website for 625.00. They sent me a quote for 399.00 so I said I'll order it in Friday. Should be here soon, I got the brakes installed with my new slotted and drilled rotors plus a picture of my Millermatic 140 w/autoset welder. Great, great welder. Plus the aluminum spool gun for this unit only costs 199.99. Normally on other welders they cost anywhere from 800-1200.00. =) Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 05/03/09

Well, both of the turbo manifolds I bought won't work. Clearance issues. So I'm either going to have to go for an OBX manifold that I found for 380.00 or if I can't get that I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the Hahn Race Craft one for around 400.00. Ouch. In the mean time I wanted to see my valve cover and intake on to see how they looked. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 04/11/09

Got the Drive Shaft Shop Stage III axles in and trans fluid. The OBX LSD tolerances are a little tight. Took some work but, their in. Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 03/29/09

Spent about 4 hours dropping the engine in. Had to separate the turbo to get the engine to sit right front to back. After I do some dirtbike riding tomorrow I'll finish up the front mount, bobble strut etc. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 03/22/09

Spent all weekend just about in the garage. I also bought some more stuff such as a Sandblasting cabinet and the new Miller 140 with auto-set Mig Welder. It's a nice welder check out this video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q79lWU9Vt5A . Doesn't get much easier than that. I didn't post any pictures of it yet because it's still in the box. I spent 7 hours putting together my blasting cabinet. I sand blasted most of my mounts and repainted them gloss back.

Oil lines are all hooked up and coolant lines from the 20g turbo are ready for the install. I'm going tomorrow to order 3 bolts that somehow turned up missing =( and a new Alternator belt. Other than that it is finally ready to drop in. As soon as I get those three stinking bolts. Anyways, here's some pictures of the engine and turbo on my hoist. Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 02/17/09

Been a bit since the last post. I pulled a muscle just below my rib cage while putting my tranny onto the engine on the stand (yes I got it on). So in the meantime while I heal up a little I've been spending money on more fun stuff for the project. Everything from Royal Purple Break in Oil to my new Turbo XS Dual Stage Boost Controller. Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 01/14/09

I ordered a Vacuum Block from P2R. This will allow me to keep all the lines nice and neat without having T's all over the place. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 12/31/08

Got the LSD all together. Happy New Year everyone! Click Here to see the picture.

    Posted 11/30/08

Made a new purchase that'll really help out at the track. Click Here to see the picture.

  Posted 11/15/08

Made some progress with the tranny. I finally got it apart and opened up. Always use a rubber dead blow hammer to separate the two. It's cast aluminum so it breaks easy, got to be careful. Anyway, Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 10/26/08

Got the pressure plate installed and oil pan installed. Also got the steering knuckles off so I can get the new hubs pressed in for the Stage III Axles. Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 10/18/08

Took my time today installing the timing belt, outer belt cover (mine's modified for access to my Fidanza adjustable cam gears) and I installed the Clutch Masters Aluminum Flywheel. Went to install the clutch and realized I forgot to get the pressure plate bolts. I'll be at the Dealership Monday morning on the way to work. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 09/28/08

Got a call from Alan (aka Alanmart) He's building an ACR Neon and needed a block. So I traded him for a 3" Borla Stainless Steel Exhaust. Couldn't pass it up since it's a direct bolt on. Only thing I'll have to fab up is the flex pipe with the 3 bolt flanges I got. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 08/24/08

Got the new block on the stand and installed the cylinder head along with crane 14 cams. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 08/23/08

Been busy buying exhaust parts, plus it's been too stinking hot to work in the garage. Luckily, tonight it's going to be nice and cool thanks to Fay. So I'll be pulling off the tranny, oil pan cleaning my cylinder head up and install my crane 14's in the head along with my MPX adjustable pulleys. I posted a picture of the exhaust parts I bought so far. Exhaust isn't cheap. =(. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 07/02/08

Tearing down the engine enough to get it on my new stand I bought. I have to go to Ace Hardware tomorrow and buy shorter bolts for it. My MPX underdrive pulley fought me on removal and lost. I ordered a new one. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 06/05/08

Been a while. Should be built and dropped in and running in 4 weeks. Keep you fingers crossed because I am. Added 2 more pictures. One of my Intake, Valve Cover powder coated Wilder Red. Plus the Oil and Coolant lines for the turbo. I'm switching everything to braided hose with AN fittings. Gonna look nice when I'm done. Click Here to see the pics.

Posted 04/13/08

Installed the new Mellings high volume oil pump, new water pump and rear main seal. Click Here to see the pics.

Posted 03/03/08

Got the Piston/Rod assemblies installed today. Still need to order some more parts. Right now it's just a money issue holding up the project. I have to buy and install a new clutch for my truck and an exhaust piece. So that has to come first since it's my daily driver. Will post as soon as I can. Click Here to see the pics.

Posted 02/09/08

Got the crank installed after getting it micro polished. Decided to go ahead and build a complete engine. Why? Well, the car is still being driven from time to time. It's not my daily driver but, it is my backup car for work. So I want as little down time as possible. Basically get this built complete, pull out the current motor build and swap this in. Anyway, that's the new plan. Click Here to see the pics of the crank installed.

Posted 02/04/08

Been a month. Every time I think I can start building the block something else pops up that needs to be bought. I just took a good look at the crank journals and I found minor wear on 3 of them. So now I have to take it to a shop and have it ground/polished. In the meantime, I bought a 3" universal exhaust kit from Hahn Racecraft. It bolts right up to the 20G Turbo. All I have to do is take it to a shop and get them to weld a custom 3" system all the way back.  Click Here to see the pictures.

Posted 01/04/08

Got my first 2 sets of ARP stud kits in. Click Here to see the picture. These are made from 8740 chrome moly steel heat treated to 190,000 psi tensile strength. This is going to be one strong build. =)

Posted 01/02/08

First off, Happy New Year!  Been waiting on ARP Studs and Nut combos to come in. I'm going to outfit ARP studs throughout to promise a strong build that can take the power I'm going to be shooting for. ARP studs are a MUST HAVE in any high performance engine build or your asking for trouble. In the meantime I replaced the washers in the OBX LSD. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 12/15/07

Got my block back today from Nelson Brothers in Largo. Bored out .020 over and hot tanked to give it that new look. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 12/08/07

Got the OBX Limited Slip Differential. Wanted to go with the Quaife LSD but, for the price I got from Alan for the OBX I couldn't pass it up. Click Here to see the picture. Also, I'm dropping off the block to be machined Monday along with dropping off my valve cover and intake manifold to get them powder coated. I'll assemble the block next weekend so stay tuned!

Posted 12/04/07

Got my Drag Radial tires in. Click Here to see the picture.

Posted 11/30/07

Finally got in my Driveshaft Shop Stage III axles from Modern Performance. Click Here to see the picture of it.

Posted 11/09/07

Wow, I was told my Griffon Aluminum Radiator wouldn't be in for about 3 weeks. It got here in 4 days! =) I have to say it's really good quality! Click Here to see the picture of it. Just waiting on my Stage III axles and getting the LSD next weekend then I can start the build!

Posted 11/03/07

Well, been a while again. I ordered the Stage 3 axles from Modern Performance, They'll be here next week and I also ordered an Aluminum Radiator by Griffin Radiators that will be here in 3 weeks.       Finally got the graph of my dyno run. click here.

Posted 01/27/07

Got the car dyno tuned at Race Related today. Brian is the guy for MegaSquirt/Megatune. The car runs soooo good now. I was hoping for more HP but since I still have stock rods, I can't push more than 250 lbs of torque. It's funny because I pulled 197 HP and 197 ft. lbs. of Torque LOL it's a 97 Neon. Anyway, I posted a video in my video section. Click here to see it.

Posted 01/20/07

Went to go meet some other Neon turbo owners on Saturday and noticed smoke blowing out the back. I immediately pulled over and popped the hood. I had an engine fire. Good thing I carry a fire extinguisher. No damage done. The oil send line to the turbo busted right above the nipple inlet with a 1" split in it. Fixed it and back up and running.

I'm taking the car to be Dyno tuned on the 27th at Race Related in Clearwater. Here's the website www.racerelated.com . It's 100.00 an hour. When it's done I'll post some pictures and video. Looking forward to it. These guys have a good reputation on www.floridaneons.org for tuning Megasquirt. Stay tuned!

Well, Stage 4 for me is done! Mega-Squirt is in, special thanks to Ted from Floridaneons.org . This was his 5th install! and he's a genius when it comes to tuning the fuel maps. Posted 10/15/06

Finally had a chance to work on the car again. Just started a new job so I've been really busy lately.     Went to the www.floridaneons.org neon meet today and had a blast. Meant alot of cool people and have come to a big decision into my build. I've decided not to get the Greddy E-manage Ultimate installed and will be going with the Mega-Squirt system. Special thanks to Ted and Allen for the advice on it. They said they'd help me to install it.  Anyway, here's some pictures from the meet.

Ok, Monday is D-day. The Stage 4 project will be done. I'm taking my car to Gulf Coast Turbos. Their doing the install on both the Greddy E-manage Ultimate and the Greddy Turbo Timer.        Jacked the car up on all four jack stands, siphoned the gas out, dropped the tank and pulled the old pump out then installed the Walboro 255lph. Fuel Pump. I got in my OBX 6.25 qt. oil pan with baffles. It's about $100 cheaper than the Moroso pan. Also partially installed the Fuel Pressure Regulator and ran the Fuel Return line. Check it out here .

Posted 06/20/05

Today I installed the custom fuel rail, Turbo XS Manual Boost Controller, SRT-4 Block Off Plate, Hooked up the Turbo XS Blow Off Valve, Finished the Piping on the Throttle Body to the Intercooler but, I've got to figure out a good way to get the piping ran back to the Turbo. Looks like I'll have to run it back across to the drivers side and up and over the transmission to the turbo. Anyway, Click here to see the pictures.

Posted 06/18/05

I'm finally getting some time to work on my car. God, I miss driving it! Been working 10 hrs. a day and trying to sell this house currently. But, I'm going to do my best to commit myself to at least 2 hrs. a day. Posted 2 new pics. Click here.

Did the test fit for the intercooler today. I'm definitely buying the Wings West Body kit from Modernperformance.com .  Why? well, when you see the picture of the intercooler hanging about 2 inches below the bumper. It should clear up any questions. =P. I need to get my center punch from work so I can get the holes drilled in the bumper.   Anyway, click here to see the pictures.

I've Been driving the car for about three days now. Man, It runs sooo good and is really fast. The boost kicks ass. It has a nice deep sound to it also. The blow off valve conversion kit sounds great.

In case you didn't notice, I'll be doing a stage 4 to this build. It will consist of an intercooler, Bigger injectors, fuel return system, High flow fuel pump (probably a walbro), a boost controller and a turbo timer. So I'll post some pictures of the car as it is now, probably tomorrow.

Been alot going on that has prevented me from working on my car. Anyway, I have it real close now and have posted 2 new pics in the Stage 3 current section. Click here to view it now.

Been a while again.  I had to pull the pistons back out because the shop I paid to press out the old and mount the new pistons assembled 2 of the rods backwards. So, I had to pull them back out and take them back. Turns out he had fired the 2 guys a week ago that worked on them. Good thing I noticed it, I could've blown the engine. Anyway, I just got done re-installing the pistons and posted a picture of it so check it out here.

I've got the pistons installed, the piping and hosing done for the turbo, wet sanded the valve cover and I just installed the boost and oil pressure gauges in the car. I'm hoping to get it all done by this weekend. Been really busy and it's slowing down my completion. I posted a pic of the gauges installed. Click here to check it out. Check back soon.

Monday is re-assembly day. The head is completely done, new valves, 3 angle valve job, ported and polished (see pics above). Pistons are assembled and ready to kick ass. So Monday is the day so check back soon. I added 2 more pictures, to see them Click here.

Well, Hurricanes seem to be calming down a bit. I finally got to put in some time on my cylinder head. I was able to port and polish the intake on the head. This is by far my best port job on an intake side. The bowl work around the valve guides looks awesome. I'll do the exhaust next weekend. I've posted 2 pics of the ports so check it out! Click here

Wow, getting standard size Turbo pistons seemed to start becoming a big pain in my ass. Everyone I called said 1 to 2 1/2 weeks for JE Pistons. Well, my business partner Pete called Clearwater Cylinder head Exchange and got me hooked up with a set of Wiseco 8.8:1 Compression Pistons. Their a bit more expensive than JE but well worth it. They come with a Teflon Coating on the skirt of the piston, Molley Rings, the whole bit. I'm really happy with these.

Pete and I already have moved the air compressor back to the business and we'll be starting work on my Cylinder head this weekend. My head is going to get all the best work done for it. Click here to see the pics of the gauges and pistons.

I have a alot more parts coming in this coming week. So be sure to check back soon.

As you can see I posted some new pictures tonight. I'll post some more tomorrow. The lettering for my back window didn't get done yet but they promised to have it done by Monday morning.  It's going to be a little bit before I get the Turbo on. I have to buy what I can when I can afford it.

I found that using Armour All on the headlights clears up the fogging effect that we neon owners have come to know and hate. As you can see it works quite nice. Tomorrow I'll post a little something that will show anyone who still hasn't purchased a Cold Air Intake a really cheap way to do your own. It's pretty cool and it works.

10/21/2003

Ok here it is. If you don't already have a cold air intake here's the cheat that will give you about the same performance as a cold air intake. Look at the picture below. The circle is where you'll connect your cone filter at and instantly have a cold air intake. Just make sure you measure the diameter of the tube and buy the correct filter to fit the diameter of the tube.

I know it works on a SOHC but not sure on the DOHC.  It's definitely worth checking out. Should save you a bundle. You'll see the clamp that holds it on. Just remove everything else and add the cone filter. You may have to cut some off of the tube. No big deal considering the performance you'll get. Happy modding people.

p.s. I'm not held responsible for anyone that screws up such a simple ugrade or anything else posted on this site.
